This foundational formula nourishes Heart Yin, enriches Kidney Yin, tonifies Qi and Blood, calms the spirit, and settles the Heart. In modern Western terms, it supports balanced nervous system function, helps maintain healthy sleep-wake cycles, promotes emotional calm and mental clarity, and assists with comfort during Yin-deficient agitation—making it particularly useful for patterns of Heart and Kidney Yin deficiency with empty fire disturbing the spirit, such as insomnia (trouble falling asleep or restless sleep with vivid dreams), palpitations, anxiety or restlessness, poor memory or concentration, night sweats, five-center heat (palms, soles, chest), dry mouth/throat, low-grade afternoon warmth, red tongue tip with little coating, or a thin, rapid pulse, commonly seen in stress-related insomnia, perimenopausal sleep disturbances with heat signs, chronic anxiety with depletion, or post-illness mental fatigue in TCM terms.
