Si Ni San from Empirical Health is a classical Chinese herbal formula powder, based on the traditional Si Ni San (Frigid Extremities Powder), originating from Zhang Zhong-jing’s Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage, ~3rd century AD).
This foundational formula spreads Liver Qi, relieves constraint, harmonizes the Spleen and Stomach, and clears internal heat from stagnation. In modern Western terms, it supports balanced emotional and digestive function, helps maintain normal stress responses and gut motility, promotes comfort during Qi stagnation with mild heat signs, and assists with symptom relief in cases of constraint—making it particularly useful for patterns of Liver Qi stagnation transforming to heat with Spleen involvement, such as irritability, mood swings, rib-side or hypochondriac distention/pain, sighing, poor appetite, alternating constipation and loose stools, bitter taste in the mouth, epigastric fullness, breast distention (especially premenstrual), or a wiry pulse with a slightly red tongue, commonly seen in PMS with irritability, stress-related digestive upset, functional dyspepsia, IBS-like patterns with emotional triggers, or mild constraint-heat in the middle/upper jiao in TCM terms.
Key Ingredients (classical composition):
- Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root) – soothes Liver Qi and relieves constraint.
- Bai Shao (White Peony Root) – nourishes blood, softens the Liver, and alleviates pain.
- Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange) – breaks Qi stagnation and promotes downward movement.
- Gan Cao (Licorice Root) – harmonizes and moderates the formula.
Preparation suggestion: Place 1 tsp (~5 g) of powder into 100 ml of boiling water, let cool, strain and drink warm. Drink twice daily, or as otherwise directed by your healthcare professional.
Storage: Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Seal tightly after opening.
This product contains no preservatives or artificial additives. Use under the guidance of your practitioner—this provides classical, effective support for Liver Qi stagnation with heat patterns involving irritability, rib-side distention, PMS symptoms, digestive upset, and emotional constraint in a professional setting.
