Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang from Empirical Health is a classical Chinese herbal formula powder, based on the traditional Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang (Lesser Abdomen Stasis-Expelling Decoction), originating from Wang Qing-ren’s Yi Lin Gai Cuo (Corrections of Errors in the Forest of Medicine, 1830 AD).
This foundational formula warms the channels, dispels cold, invigorates blood, resolves stasis, and alleviates pain. In modern Western terms, it supports healthy pelvic and lower abdominal circulation, helps maintain normal inflammatory responses in the reproductive area, promotes smooth menstrual flow, and assists with comfort during cyclic discomfort—making it particularly useful for patterns of cold congealing and blood stasis in the lower jiao, such as severe cramping or fixed pain in the lower abdomen (often worse with cold or before/during menstruation), dark or clotted menstrual blood, irregular cycles, cold hands/feet, pale complexion, or pain that improves with warmth and pressure, commonly seen in dysmenorrhea, endometriosis-like patterns, infertility support with cold signs, or chronic pelvic discomfort in TCM terms.
Key Ingredients (classical composition):
- Dang Gui (Chinese Angelica Root) – nourishes and invigorates blood.
- Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome) – invigorates blood and moves Qi.
- Chi Shao (Red Peony Root) – clears heat from blood stasis and alleviates pain.
- Pu Huang (Typha Pollen) – stops bleeding and resolves stasis.
- Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterus Feces) – invigorates blood and alleviates pain.
- Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizome) – invigorates blood, moves Qi, and strongly alleviates pain.
- Mo Yao (Myrrh) – invigorates blood and reduces swelling/pain.
- Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) – warms channels and dispels cold.
- Xiao Hui Xiang (Fennel Fruit) – warms the lower jiao and disperses cold.
- Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) – warms the middle and disperses cold.
