Long Dan Xie Gan Tang from Empirical Health is a classical Chinese herbal formula powder, based on the traditional Long Dan Xie Gan Tang (Gentiana Longdancao Decoction to Drain the Liver), originating from the Qing Dynasty text Yi Fang Ji Jie (Collected Explanations of Medical Formulas, ~1682 AD).

This foundational formula clears excess Liver and Gallbladder fire, drains damp-heat from the lower jiao, and soothes Liver Qi. In modern Western terms, it supports healthy inflammatory balance in the liver and urogenital systems, helps maintain normal bile flow and detoxification processes, promotes comfort during heat-related patterns, and assists with symptom relief in cases of excess heat—making it particularly useful for patterns of Liver fire blazing upward with damp-heat in the lower jiao, such as irritability, short temper, red eyes or bitter taste in the mouth, headache (especially temporal or vertex), rib-side pain or distention, dark or scanty urine, vaginal itching/discharge, genital swelling or pain, difficult/painful urination, ear ringing or sudden deafness (from heat), or insomnia with restlessness, commonly seen in acute conjunctivitis, herpes zoster, urinary tract irritation, prostatitis-like patterns, migraine with anger triggers, or PMS with heat signs in TCM terms.

Key Ingredients (classical composition):

  • Long Dan Cao (Gentiana Root) – clears Liver/Gallbladder fire and drains damp-heat.
  • Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) – clears heat and dries dampness.
  • Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit) – clears heat from the triple burner and drains fire.
  • Mu Tong (Akebia Stem) – promotes urination and drains heat from the heart channel.
  • Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed) – clears heat, promotes urination, and drains damp-heat from the lower jiao.
  • Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome) – promotes urination and drains damp-heat.
  • Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root) – soothes Liver Qi and raises clear Yang.
  • Dang Gui (Chinese Angelica Root) – nourishes and harmonizes blood.
  • Sheng Di Huang (Fresh Rehmannia Root) – cools blood and nourishes Yin.
  • Gan Cao (Licorice Root) – harmonizes and moderates the formula.
