Ge Xia Zhu Yu Tang from Empirical Health is a classical Chinese herbal formula powder, based on the traditional Ge Xia Zhu Yu Tang (Drive Out Blood Stasis Below the Diaphragm Decoction), originating from Wang Qing-ren’s Yi Lin Gai Cuo (Corrections of Errors in the Forest of Medicine, 1830 AD).

This foundational formula invigorates blood, resolves stasis, moves Qi, alleviates pain, and clears accumulations below the diaphragm. In modern Western terms, it supports healthy blood circulation and tissue perfusion in the upper abdomen, helps maintain normal inflammatory responses in the epigastric and hypochondriac regions, promotes comfort during fixed or stabbing pain, and assists with symptom relief in cases of chronic stasis—making it particularly useful for patterns of blood stasis with Qi stagnation in the upper abdomen, such as fixed, stabbing, or cramping pain under the ribs or in the epigastrium, palpable masses or lumps (with or without pain), dark purple tongue or spots on the sides, wiry or choppy pulse, chest oppression, belching, acid reflux with stasis signs, chronic gastritis with fixed pain, or hepatobiliary discomfort with blood stasis features, commonly seen in chronic epigastric pain, liver/gallbladder stasis patterns, costochondritis-like symptoms, or upper abdominal masses in TCM terms.

Key Ingredients (classical composition):

  • Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterus Feces) – invigorates blood and resolves stasis.
  • Dang Gui (Chinese Angelica Root) – nourishes and invigorates blood.
  • Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome) – invigorates blood and moves Qi.
  • Tao Ren (Peach Kernel) – invigorates blood and resolves stasis.
  • Hong Hua (Carthamus Flower) – invigorates blood and resolves stasis.
  • Chi Shao (Red Peony Root) – invigorates blood and clears stasis heat.
  • Mu Dan Pi (Tree Peony Bark) – clears heat from blood and resolves stasis.
  • Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizome) – invigorates blood, moves Qi, and strongly alleviates pain.
  • Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rhizome) – moves Qi and relieves constraint.
  • Zhi Ke (Bitter Orange Fruit) – moves Qi and breaks stagnation.
  • Wu Yao (Lindera Root) – moves Qi and alleviates pain.

Preparation suggestion: Place 1 tsp (~5 g) of powder into 100 ml of boiling water, let cool, strain and drink warm. Drink twice daily, or as otherwise directed by your healthcare professional.

Storage: Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Seal tightly after opening.

This product contains no preservatives or artificial additives. Use under the guidance of your practitioner—this provides classical, effective support for blood stasis with Qi stagnation patterns involving fixed upper abdominal pain, epigastric fullness, rib-side discomfort, dark tongue signs, and related digestive or hepatobiliary stasis concerns in a professional setting.
