Gan Mai Da Zao Tang from Empirical Health is a classical Chinese herbal formula powder, based on the traditional Gan Mai Da Zao Tang (Licorice, Wheat, and Jujube Decoction), originating from Zhang Zhong-jing’s Jin Gui Yao Lue (Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet, ~3rd century AD).

This foundational formula nourishes the Heart, calms the spirit, tonifies the Spleen, and harmonizes the middle jiao. In modern Western terms, it supports emotional balance and nervous system stability, helps maintain healthy stress responses, promotes calm mood and mental clarity, and assists with gentle nourishment during depletion—making it particularly useful for patterns of Heart Yin and Spleen Qi deficiency with spirit disturbance, such as emotional instability, frequent crying or sadness without reason, anxiety, restlessness, absent-mindedness, insomnia, palpitations, fatigue, poor appetite, or a pale tongue with thin coating and a wiry or thin pulse, commonly seen in stress-related emotional disorders, mild depression with depletion, perimenopausal mood swings, or “zang zao” (visceral agitation) patterns in TCM terms.

Key Ingredients (classical composition):

  • Gan Cao (Licorice Root) – tonifies the Spleen, nourishes the Heart, and moderates urgency.
  • Xiao Mai (Wheat Grain) – nourishes the Heart Yin and calms the spirit.
  • Da Zao (Jujube Fruit) – tonifies the Spleen, nourishes blood, and harmonizes the middle jiao.

Preparation suggestion: Place 1 tsp (~5 g) of powder into 100 ml of boiling water, let cool, strain and drink warm. Drink twice daily, or as otherwise directed by your healthcare professional.

Storage: Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Seal tightly after opening.

This product contains no preservatives or artificial additives. Use under the guidance of your practitioner—this provides classical, effective support for Heart and Spleen deficiency patterns involving emotional instability, anxiety, sadness, restlessness, and related mood or spirit disturbances in a professional setting.
