Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang from Empirical Health is a classical Chinese herbal formula powder, based on the traditional Chai Hu Jia Long Gu Mu Li Tang (Bupleurum, Dragon Bone, and Oyster Shell Decoction), originating from Zhang Zhong-jing’s Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Cold Damage, ~3rd century AD).
This foundational formula harmonizes and releases the Shaoyang layer, calms the spirit, settles fright, subdues Yang, and resolves phlegm. In modern Western terms, it supports balanced nervous system function, helps maintain emotional stability during stress or transition, promotes calm sleep and mental clarity, and assists with comfort in patterns of agitation or overstimulation—making it particularly useful for patterns of Shaoyang disharmony with phlegm-heat disturbing the Heart and spirit, such as irritability, restlessness, anxiety or panic attacks, insomnia (trouble falling asleep or restless sleep), palpitations, chest oppression, dizziness, fullness in the chest/ribs, bitter taste in the mouth, alternating chills and fever, or a wiry/slippery pulse with a red tongue tip, commonly seen in acute emotional upset, post-trauma anxiety, perimenopausal mood swings with heat/agitation, or stress-induced insomnia and palpitations in TCM terms.
