Chai Ge Jie Ji Tang from Empirical Health is a classical Chinese herbal formula powder, based on the traditional Chai Ge Jie Ji Tang (Bupleurum and Pueraria Decoction to Release the Muscle Layer), originating from the Qing Dynasty text Shang Han Liu Shu (Six Books on Cold Damage) by Tao Hua.
This foundational formula releases the exterior, clears heat from the muscle layer, and harmonizes the Shaoyang and Yangming channels. In modern Western terms, it supports healthy immune response during early-stage infections, helps maintain normal body temperature regulation, promotes comfort during alternating chills and fever, and assists with symptom relief in cases of exterior cold transforming to interior heat—making it particularly useful for patterns of exterior wind-cold constraining the muscle layer with interior heat, such as alternating chills and fever (or persistent fever with chills), headache, stiff neck or back, generalized body aches, thirst, bitter taste in the mouth, nasal congestion, sore throat, or a floating and tight pulse with a thin yellow tongue coating, commonly seen in early-stage upper respiratory infections, flu-like illnesses, sinusitis with muscle aches, or “cold turning to heat” patterns in TCM terms.
Key Ingredients (classical composition):
- Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root) – releases the exterior and harmonizes Shaoyang.
- Ge Gen (Pueraria Root) – releases the muscle layer, generates fluids, and relieves neck/back stiffness.
- Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) – clears heat from the upper jiao and muscle layer.
- Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Root) – dispels wind-cold and relieves body aches.
- Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) – dispels wind and relieves headache.
- Shi Gao (Gypsum) – clears intense heat and generates fluids.
- Bai Shao (White Peony Root) – nourishes blood and relieves pain.
- Gan Cao (Licorice Root) – harmonizes and moderates the formula.
- Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) – releases the exterior and harmonizes the Stomach.
- Da Zao (Jujube Fruit) – tonifies the middle and harmonizes.
