Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma Tang from Empirical Health is a classical Chinese herbal formula, available as concentrated extract granules (or similar powder form), based on the traditional Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma Tang (Pinellia, Atractylodes Macrocephala, and Gastrodia Decoction), originating from the Qing Dynasty text Yi Xue Xin Yu (Awakening the Heart to the Study of Medicine).
This foundational formula transforms and dries Phlegm, extinguishes internal Wind, strengthens the Spleen, and dispels Dampness. It is specifically indicated for patterns of Wind-Phlegm disturbance (often arising from Spleen deficiency allowing Phlegm to accumulate and combine with uprising Liver Wind), resulting in symptoms such as dizziness or vertigo (possibly severe), headache (dull or heavy), stifling sensation in the chest and diaphragm, nausea or vomiting, copious sputum, focal distention, heaviness in the head or body, or related signs of turbid Phlegm obstructing the head/orifices—commonly seen in conditions like Meniere’s disease, vertigo, sinus issues, or certain headaches/migraines from a TCM perspective.
Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma Tang is one of the most effective and frequently recommended classical formulas for addressing Wind-Phlegm patterns leading to dizziness, vertigo, and related head symptoms.
